Preserving the past….

The former Village of Tottenville had no organization or place to care for its records and treasures of the past. Scattered in shoeboxes, attic trunks, scrapbooks and dusty basement library stacks were the isolated repositories that contained clues to the village's history. Memories of earlier times were gradually fading. As early residents and their descendants moved away or died, pieces of history went with them.

...for the Future.

Founded in 2003, the mission of the Tottenville Historical Society is to "collect, preserve and document the history and culture of the former village of Tottenville, County of Richmond, Staten Island, New York through the collection and preservation of artifacts, photographs and memorabilia and to share this information with the general public through its website, newsletters, educational programs and exhibits. These artifacts include, but are not limited to, photographs, journals, diaries, articles and other records."

Our website was created to share with you some of the events, people and places of the past through documented information and images that are part of our collections. We hope you enjoy the site, and that you will check back often. This website, along with our newsletters, exhibits and programs, not only serve to educate, but also to foster an appreciation of our town's heritage.
