Family History

Primary sources....secondary records....wills and probate packets....cemetery records....military records....SSDI....message boards....RootsWeb.com....Ancestry.com....the list goes on! The Internet has opened the door to an endless array of online databases and repositories.

Today millions of Americans are searching for their ancestors.  Many have been tracing their family tree for more than a decade.  It can be exciting.  It can be frustrating.  And it can definitely uncover the expected!

The Tottenville Historical Society has been helping family historians with their research for many years, sometimes providing new information or new direction as new resources become available to us on a regular basis.  Newspapers, scrapbooks, cemetery and church records can be invaluable, but the information goes undiscovered unless these items are indexed.

A check of our archives would include (1) all published Staten Island historical books (late 19th century-circa 1930) in our library, (2) indices search (newspapers, business, scrapbook collections), (3) historic maps, (4) family history folders and subject files including community folders once we can determine where they lived,  (5) any other relevant source available in our collection.
