We are happy to offer Tottenville's first self-guided walking tour brochure, Amboy Road-Main Street. The buildings on this tour were selected to give you a sense of Tottenville's architectural history, and to acquaint you with the homes from its earliest settlement days. We invite you to explore Tottenville and see some of our most unique and interesting homes and buildings, many still standing from the days of sea captains and oystermen. Several buildings retain their original architectural details, while others offer just a hint of what used to be.
Beginning in May 2008, you will find the printed brochures at key locations throughout Staten Island including many libraries and the ferry terminals at St. George and Manhattan. Or click here and print a copy directly from our website.
Tottenville is easily reached by public transportation (S74 and S78 buses and the Staten Island Railway). So leave the car at home, put your walking shoes on, and come and spend an afternoon with us here in Tottenville!
Note: Many private homes are on the tours. Please observe courtesy. The information contained in the walking tour brochure may not be reproduced without the written consent of the Tottenville Historical Society.
Funding for both walking tour brochures was provided by the Richmond County Savings Foundation.

WALKING TOUR #1: Amboy Road-Main Street
The town of Tottenville developed when John Totten, Jr. built a general store and dock at the foot of Main Street (formerly Totten St. ). Lower Main St. quickly developed into the business center of the village. Middle Main St., known as "Quality Row," was lined with majestic trees and stately homes, built by sea captains and oystermen. Amboy Road is one of the oldest roads on Staten Island, dating back to the 17th century. It is commonly referred to as "the road that leads to the ferry" in early property deeds.

WALKING TOUR #2: Amboy Road
Our second walking tour brochure titled Amboy Road spotlights the religious institutions in the community. Six of the town's eight houses of worship are located along Amboy Road, one of Staten Island's oldest roads. New and old, large and small, commercial and residential -- Amboy Road has it all!
