"To arrive in Tottenville is to become sensible of the importance of the oyster. Anchored out in the Kill; made fast to the little wharves; under sail in the offing, white-hulled oyster sloops meet the eye on every side. Below the bluffs, the beach is lined with oyster floats, upon which the bivalves in the fall are taken to the fresher waters of New Jersey rivers to be fattened for the market; oyster shells are everywhere. The largest and most comfortable houses in and about the village, we are told, belong to oystermen, active and retired, whose modest fortunes have been raked from the great oyster-beds covering the bottom of the Lower Bay from Staten Island to Keyport. .... Here the oyster is king. "

The Tottenville Historical Society and the Preservation League of Staten Island have jointly published Tottenville: The Town the Oyster Built. A Staten Island Community, Its People, Industry and Architecture, written by Barnett Shepherd, historian and former executive director of Historic Richmond Town.

This comprehensive book is based on the findings of the Tottenville Historic Resource Survey, a three-year project of extensive research and documentation. Tottenville: The Town the Oyster Built will be a valuable resource for schoolchildren, historians, and scholars. The book is illustrated with many rare and never-before-published photographs and prints. It promises to educate and entertain and to become a treasured family keepsake.

Reviews

Tottenville, Staten Island. A place of rich history, historical significance–and your last stop before leaving the shores of the State of New York. No one is better suited to tell the story of this fascinating community than Barnett Shepherd. He brings a passion to his love of all things Staten Island, and has spent more than three decades exploring its history and its shores. Travel with him around this southernmost town in NewYork State. Learn of its people, rich architecture and how post-Verrazano Narrows Bridge development changed the face of a town. It's truly a unique story of a tiny slice of America.              Brian J. Laline, Editor, Staten Island Advance.

Barnett Shepherd’s book is a model of what every local history should be – carefully-researched, set within a regional context and chock full of informative photographs. What is now the quiet suburban town of Tottenville once had industrial works that ranged from oystering to shipbuilding to the manufacture of terra cotta, including the notable terra cotta façade of the Woolworth Building. It is good to be reminded that New York’s industrial waterfront once stretched to the southernmost tip of Staten Island.        Kent Barwick, President Municipal Art Society
